Handling of Spillage in Microbiology lab procedure

1.0 OBJECTIVE

To lay down the Procedure for Handling of Spillage in Microbiology lab

2.0 SCOPE

This procedure is applicable the to the Procedure for Handling of Spillage in Microbiology lab.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY

3.1 Microbiologist /Officer is responsible for the execution. 

3.2 HOD or designee is responsible for review, effective implementation and compliance to the handling of spillage for execution.

4.0 PROCEDURE 

4.1 Clean the residue of spillage and collect the entire residue in stainless steel container. Use Protective measures like wearing nose masks and gloves while cleaning. 

4.2 Spray 70% Isopropyl alcohol / 2.5% Dettol / 2.5% Savlon over the spillage area and mop with wet cloth.

4.3 In case of any breakage clean and discard the broth and agar plates and clean the area immediately with 70% Isopropyl alcohol or with concentrated disinfectants like 2.5% Dettol / 2.5% Savlon.

4.4 Discard all residues of spillage materials.
