Disposal of Microbial Cultures and Culture Media

1.0 OBJECTIVE

To lay down the procedure for disposal of microbial cultures and culture media.

2.0 SCOPE

This procedure is applicable for disposal of microbial cultures and culture media in the   Microbiology Lab.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY 

3.1 Microbiologist /Officer is responsible for the execution. 

3.2 HOD or designee is responsible for review, effective implementation and compliance to the disposal of microbial and culture media for execution.      

4.0 Procedure

4.1 Upon observation, collect used media flasks, bottles, Petri dishes and cultures Slants /ampoules/suspensions etc in vertical autoclave for discarding.

4.2 After autoclaving of the loaded material, Collect destructed liquid and solid media in the Stainless steel container and send to Effluent treatment plant.

4.3 Clean all the glassware after discarding the media.

4.4 After washing pour 500mL of 2.5% Dettol or Savlon solution in the washing sink, to disinfect the drain line. 

4.5 Record the details in Destruction record for culture media as per Attachment # 1
